Belianska Cave: the only accessible cave in the Tatra Mountains

Belianska Cave is one of the most visited caves in Slovakia and, in addition to its rock formations, is known for its rich calcite sinter decorations. Even after more than 125 years of exploration, it still holds many secrets that nature has not yet revealed.
Hidden in the Belianske Tatras, at an altitude of 890 meters, it offers a unique view into the underground world that has been formed over thousands of years. A visit to this cave is a perfect combination of nature, history, and adventure.
History
The firstmentions of the cave date back to the 18th century, but it was not opened to the public until 1881. Interestingly, among its discoverers were poachers who were looking for shelter from inclement weather. The gradual discovery of its corridors revealed beautiful decorations and huge domes, which are now admired by thousands of visitors every year. In recent years, the cave has also been used for therapeutic speleoclimatic stays.
What to expect during the tour
The cave route is approximately 1,370 meters long and the tour lasts about 70 minutes. You will see stalactite waterfalls, high domes, and formations resembling various animals and figures. Among the most famous parts are the Music Hall with excellent acoustics, the Dome of Collapsed Ceilings, and the Palace of Ladies.
The temperature in the cave is around 5–6 °C all year round, so it is worth packing warmer clothes, even if it is summer outside.

Where is it located?
The cave is located on the northern slope of Kobylie Hill in the eastern part of the Belianske Tatras. It lies directly within the Tatra National Park, in the Belianske Tatras National Nature Reserve.

Access from Tatranská Kotlina
You can reach thecave fromthe village of Tatranská Kotlina. From the parking lot, an educational trail approximately 1,000 meters long with an elevation gain of 122 meters leads to the entrance. The ascent takes about 25 minutes, and along the way you can enjoy beautiful views of the Belianske Tatras.
Transport by car:
- It takes 35 minutes (31.8 km) from Štrbské Pleso.
